SWAN Library Consortium Expanding to 97 Libraries in Illinois

Westmont, IL –Nineteen libraries in the Cook, DuPage, and Kane county area will be joining the Illinois library consortium, System Wide Automated Network, commonly referred to as SWAN Library Services. These libraries are currently part of two existing library consortia, Library Integrated Network Consortium and Multitype Automation Group in Cooperation and will migrate into SWAN’s current 78-member library consortium on May 1, 2018.

All three consortia run the same Integrated Library System provided by SirsiDynix, a library management technology company. Services, staff work flow processing, cataloging practice, and the patron experience of searching the catalog are a close match and provided the synergy to make this migration possible. Shared geography helped shape the growing consortium.

The largest benefit of this migration is for the patrons of the combined 97 libraries who will be able to place holds and check out library materials from the full membership of libraries. This effort is supplemented by Reaching Across Illinois Library System, which offers the delivery of materials throughout the system and provides resource sharing across the membership.

Growing by the numbers:

  • Libraries Served: from 78 to 97
  • Population Served (Patrons served by public libraries in the consortium): Current SWAN (1,436,829) + LINC (222,104) + MAGIC (128,346) = 1,787,279
  • Library Items in the Catalog: Current SWAN (7,924,458) + LINC (1,187,200) + MAGIC (730,941) = 9,842,599
  • Annual Circulation: Current SWAN (13,456,399) + LINC (4,350,000) + MAGIC (1,532,926) = 19,339,325

Post-migration, the SWAN consortium will have a combined catalog of nearly 10 million items, serving a population of 1.8 million patrons. And, annual circulation is expected to top 20 million.
